The Department of Christian Education of the Diocese of Madras seeks to nurture children, young people, families and the wider congregation in the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ through Bible-based teaching, Christian formation, worship resources and faith-building activities. The department serves the educational mission of the Diocese by preparing relevant, age-appropriate and spiritually meaningful resources for use in pastorates, congregations, Sunday Schools, Vacation Bible Schools and homes.
The department functions through three major wings: the Almanac Wing, the Sunday School Wing and the Vacation Bible School (VBS) Wing. The Almanac Wing publishes the annual Meipparin Meivakku (The Voice of the Shepherd) and the Daily Bible Reading Card, encouraging regular Scripture reading and daily spiritual reflection. The Sunday School Wing prepares yearly teaching books based on a particular theme for different age categories and publishes the Good Pasture Daily Bible Reading Card for children. It also conducts an annual Children's Rally, as well as Bible-based activities such as memory verse competitions and the annual Scripture examination. The VBS Wing prepares a ten-day syllabus and teaching book each year around a central biblical theme. It also facilitates the composition and preparation of English and Tamil songs that support the lessons and help children learn biblical truths through music.
Through these ministries, the Department of Christian Education equips teachers, directors, parents and children to grow in faith, deepen their understanding of Scripture and become committed disciples of Jesus Christ.
