The Diocese of Madras is the oldest in the Church of South India. Tracing its roots to 1639 and the founding of the city of Madras, the Diocese began with early Anglican worship at Fort St. George. In 1680, St. Mary's Church, the oldest Anglican church east of the Suez Canal, was consecrated.
The Church of South India is the result of the union of churches of varying traditions: Anglican, Methodist, Congregational, Presbyterian and Reformed. The Diocese is proud that the Church of South India came into being on 27 September 1947 and was formally inaugurated at St. George's Cathedral, Chennai, India.
Our Diocese spans from Nellore in the north to Chidambaram in the south, covering several districts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh states in India, partially or fully like Chennai, Thiruvallur, Ranipet, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Pondicherry, Cuddalore, Chittoor and Nellore.
